Music is a field that has evolved over centuries. Among them, MTV’s contribution to the promotion of music is laudable. This music channel played a major role in introducing and popularizing some big names including Madonna, Michael Jackson, Def Leopard, Cyndi Lauper and Prince in the 80’s. During this period MTV became the synonym for popular music.
Before launching MTV there were fewer platforms to air music on. Only Warner’s cable television network in places like Ohio and Columbus were exhibiting certain music albums and their coverage area was very limited. The band and artists heavily depended on live concerts and radio for popularizing their performance. But with the launch of MTV in 1981, this task became much easier. MTV provided the much needed platform for the young artists and viewers. Its inaugural programs such as Ladies and Gentlemen, Rock and Roll and many other music based programs got overwhelming response among the music lovers all over the world.
MTV helped both the new wave artists who were just trying to establish themselves and the oldies as well that were already making waves. Through MTV programs, audiences were able to communicate to their favorite artists easily. MTVs various programs helped popular artists like Michael Jackson, The Police, Madonna and many others to increase their popularity. MTVs worldwide network helped artists to gain recognition globally in a quick span of time. MTVs VJs such as Nina Blackwood, Martha Quinn, Mark Goodman, Julie Brown, and J.J. Jackson become very popular among music lovers.
These VJs anchored various pop music programs including 120 Minutes, Headbangers Ball, Club MTV, MTV Unplugged, Remote Control, Yo! MTV Raps, Video Music Awards. All these programs revolved around the pop music and this helped them in a big way in popularizing the pop music.
In late nineties MTV slowly changed it tracks and started moving away from music. Instead it concentrated over fashion and content oriented programs.
